Happy as a Pig in Mud at Morristown’s Committed Pig

A plethora of tasty beef and pork options await.

As we were walking to The Committed Pig in Morristown for lunch, my friend told me that they have the most outrageously delicious red-velvet, deep-fried Oreo cookies for dessert. “No way, “ I said. “That is where I draw the line. It’s carnival food, fried, full of calories. I can’t eat them. I’ll be on the treadmill for hours.” Did I succumb and if so, were the fried Oreos worth it?

The Committed Pig, which opened in March, was packed with people at lunchtime. Internet postings have reported that on weekends there is a line out the door. Plan accordingly.

Service is swift, don’t expect to have a leisurely lunch. The waitress handed us the menus and then asked what we would like to order. I asked, “Can I look at the menu first?” Water comes in a Ball mason jar. Décor is farmhouse chic with mismatched chairs and wood or stone walls. It is a cute restaurant, albeit noisy.

Brunch items include pancakes, French toast, eggs, and pork roll and cheese items, while varieties of grilled cheese, salads and burgers are offered at lunch. We opted to share a cheeseburger with a side of crispy, you-cannot-eat-just-one waffle fries and an avocado Munster cheese sandwich with sun-dried tomato pesto that is grilled in garlic butter and accompanied by sweet potato fries. This was a lot of fried food but at least we did not order the Burgernut, which is a burger with American cheese served on a glazed donut with ketchup.

The juicy, flavorful and highly recommended burger was made with a hanger steak, short rib, and brisket blend from Pat La Frieda. The grilled cheese, a comfort food for me, was deliciously different with a bit of spice from the sun-dried tomato pesto.

Yes, we ordered the deep-fried, red-velvet Oreos, which came in a fryer basket along with a side of cream cheese sauce for dipping. Although there were six to the order, I managed to keep my mouth shut after eating one but can report that they were worth the calories. How can they not be?

The Committed Pig is open daily for brunch and dinner. There is also a location in Manasquan.

Although we did not have any pork, we were happy as pigs in mud leaving this restaurant. My doctor may not be as happy when my next cholesterol test is taken.
