Feb 17–May 23: Two exhibitions put the finishing touch on the Newark Museum’s ongoing centennial celebration. “Blackout” transforms the museum’s classical Engelhard Court. Paul Henry Ramirez, a contemporary New Jersey artist, paints the space with blacked-out walls, abstract forms, and bold colors.
The museum also presents “Constructive Spirit: Abstract Art in South and North America, 1920s–50s,” the first exhibition to explore pan-American geometric abstraction in the first half of the twentieth century. Wed–Fri, noon–5 pm; Sat–Sun, 10 am–5 pm; $6–$10. 49 Washington St, Newark (973-596-6550; newarkmuseum.org).
