Jimmie Lee squeezes between the long tables at Casa Carollo comedy club in Marlton, fist-bumping his way to the stage. “Hey,” he calls out, grabbing the microphone. “Just flew in from Las Vegas.” In fact, he had driven a few miles from his home in Voorhees. And his real name is James Wiener. To many, he is Dr. Wiener, a dentist with three offices in South Jersey.
On this night—and for about 100 nights a year—he is a leather-jacketed comic with a repertoire of salty—though not profane—one-liners and put-downs.
“In Vegas, New York, New York was too expensive, so we stayed at Newark, Newark,” he says, firing off one-liners. “My uncle from Jersey thought Washington crossed the Delaware because he had a girl in Pennsylvania.”
Wiener, 51, has a “sane wife” and two children. His dental practice, Primadent, allows him to indulge his passion for entertaining. Growing up in Longport, he played in a rock band, but his mother wanted him to enter a traditional profession.
In addition to upcoming shows in Las Vegas and California, he’ll be playing locally at Gia’s Restaurant in Bridgeton (April 11) and the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, Pennsylvania (April 16).
