Dark Ages, High Spirits

Turn back the clock with a wild knight at Medieval Times.

Get The Point?: Jousting knights vie to unhorse each other.

Think you’re in Lyndhurst? No way. You’re in Spain, the 11th century. King Don Carlos has invited all lords and ladies of the realm (that would be you) to his castle for an epic Tournament of Knights. Take a seat in the arena of the Medieval Times fortress and let the affable serfs serve you a rather modern four-course meal, including roast chicken, spare ribs, tomato bisque and garlic bread. Lick your fingers—the King doesn’t do utensils (he does provide wet naps).

The contests get under way just as soup is served. Six knights enter on horseback, their colors corresponding to the six sections of the arena. They face off in relay races, spear hurling and lance skills. The princess bestows a flower on each winning knight. They in turn toss the flowers to fair ladies in the crowd.

The stars include a falcon that soars above the crowd and handsome stallions trained from birth at the Medieval Times Chapel Creek Ranch in Sanger, Texas. The knights capably guide their steeds through a display of dressage skills. Then things get serious. Lances shatter and knights are knocked from their mounts in jousts, followed by hand-to-hand combat. Swords spark. Competitors are eliminated one by one until only the ultimate victor remains.

Along the way, the lord chancellor and princess wish happy birthday to the little lords and ladies. Afterwards, try on royal costumes and shop for chalices.
