In stores this month is the latest in hand-held gadgetry from Burlington-based Franklin Electronic Publishers (www.franklin.com), designed to smooth your kids’ path to the Ivy League—or at least lighten some backpacks.

An interactive tutorial with a mouthful of a name, the Princeton Review Pocket Prep for the New SAT ($179) features practice exams, 5,000 SAT word flash cards, and self-directed tutorials. A talking Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary ($99.95) containing more than 200,000 words can be equipped to download e-books and encyclopedias. Merriam-Webster’s talking Spanish-English Dictionary ($119.95) features 2,000 travel phrases and 5 million translations. A deluxe edition, with four additional languages, costs $199.
