Funny Pages

Everyone knows New Jersey is funny. Outside of those not-so-hilarious “What exit?” jokes, we seem to breed some of America’s most famous comedians. So it makes sense that comedy’s latest rising star is one of us.

Punchline Magazine, a bimonthly online journal covering the stand-up comedy scene, is the brainchild of Dylan Gadino of Hackensack. Launched last September, the e-zine (punchlinemagazine.com) features stories about comedians—Lewis Black, Dane Cook, and Carlos Mencia among them—as well as venue profiles and club listings.

Gadino, who holds a day job as research chief at Life & Style magazine, and who’s written for the music mags Revolver and Alternative Press, has been a stand-up fan since watching George Carlin’s HBO specials when he was in eighth grade. “I thought, Wouldn’t it be great to have a Rolling Stone or a Spin that treats stand-up the same way those magazines treat music?

As for Punchline’s future, Gadino is realistic. “I would love for it to become a print magazine, but I think we’re a long way off,” he says. “I would need some very wealthy investor to give me a few million dollars.”

Hey, he’s not joking.
