The Cherry Hill resident’s creation earned her the top prize in the Bloomingdale’s Final Cut prom-dress design contest last April, beating almost 500 other applicants. Her vision has since been brought to life by the brand A.B.S. by Allen Schwartz and is on sale for $460 at all four Bloomingdale’s locations in New Jersey and bloomingdales.com.

Like any good designer, Maeng put the needs of the potential client first when designing her winning dress. She considered fit, versatility, and color when finalizing her sketches.

“Prom is something that a girl will want to remember for the rest of her life, so it is important that she looks and feels her best,” she says.

The final product is a pale yellow, full-length satin gown with a zipper closure.

As part of her prize, Maeng was treated to a weekend in New York City, where she stayed at the Loews Regency Hotel, met with Bloomingdale’s buyers, and dined at David Burke’s David and Donatella restaurant.
The budding fashionista lists top names like Valentino, Chloé, and Philip Lim among her favorite designers. Now 17 and a senior at Cherry Hill High School East, Maeng is planning on attending fashion school in the fall.

“Hopefully, I will have my own brand in the future and hold a contest,” she says, “because I know that this has pretty much changed my life.”
