When soon-to-be-former acting Governor Richard J. Codey rejected the proposed state slogan “New Jersey: We’ll win you over”—too negative, the guv said—he asked the public for ideas. The good citizens of the Garden State responded with more than 6,000 of them, some of which can even be repeated in polite company. In the interest of contributing to this most worthy public discourse, we asked some prominent New Jerseyans for their suggestions.
Yogi Berra: “New Jersey: Nobody Goes There Anymore, It’s Always Too Crowded.”
Governor Codey: “New Jersey: Love at First Sight” or “New Jersey: You Got a Problem With That?”
James Cramer, financial guru, host of CNBC’s Mad Money: “New Jersey: Cooler Than You Thought.”
John Cunningham, historian and author: “New Jersey: America’s Main Road,” “New Jersey: A Mirror on America,” or “New Jersey: We Ain’t All Gangstas”
State senator Thomas Kean Jr. “New Jersey and You, Perfect Together” (the slogan first championed by his namesake father and former governor)
John McPhee, Pulitzer Prize–winning author and Princeton professor: “New Jersey, the Secret State—Come and Be Surprised”
Robert Pinsky, Long Branch native and former poet Laureate: “The Best State”
Helen Shannon, director, New Jersey State Museum: “New Jersey: Still Revolutionary”
