Considering the number of video games that glorify car wrecks, street killings, even prostitution, a graffiti game seems as harmless as a Frisbee. Hip-hop clothing impresario Marc Ecko of East Brunswick, acting on the notion that no legitimate fashion designer should be without his own video game, recently launched Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure.
Among graffiti artists, getting up means getting noticed. In Ecko’s game, which stars a graffiti artist named Trane, players climb a vertical urban landscape and leave their signature graffiti designs—their tags—in strategic locations, all in the name of exposing a corrupt city government.
“When Marc came to us with this idea, it was a breath of fresh air,” says Ryan Barr of video game publisher Atari Inc. “This is not a typical hip-hop game.” And with voices provided by Adam West, Rosario Dawson, Sean Combs, Brittany Murphy, and George Hamilton, it doesn’t sound like one either.
