Style: Upscale Irish pub with classic tin ceiling, elegant wooden bar and nostalgic sports-bar accents.
Don’t Miss: The house-made soups for starters. The turkey pot pie soup was lightly creamed, tasty, but not overly spiced, with generous chunks of turkey and vegetables. The menu boasts an array of salads and 10 other appetizers, including Thai chicken skewers with peanut dressing ($9) and Bistro mussels served with frites ($13). Numerous additional starters appear on the specials menu. Entrées range from the California club ($10) and a basic hamburger on a brioche bun ($11, plus choice of toppings) to organic wild-caught salmon, prepared with a sweet soy-sauce glaze and served with potato and veggie ($24). A featured dish is 1928 Steak Frites, a 12-ounce New York strip accompanied by excellent french fries and veggies ($23). Fitzgerald’s also bakes a variety of pizzas, from simple cheese ($11) to caramelized onion, bacon, shitake mushroom and boursin cheese ($14). The creative dessert offerings are reasonably priced ($7) and include a unique and yummy banana-bread pudding served with cinnamon ice cream.
Heads Up: The terrific kids’ menu includes grilled cheese with salad or fries; cheeseburger or pulled-pork sliders; and grilled chicken. It’s $7 for kids 12 and under; $12 for kids over 12. For the adult kids, there’s an extensive list of imported and draft beers on tap. We enjoyed the Radeberger German pilsner, beautifully served in its tall logo glass ($6).
The Scoop: Tucked away in Glen Ridge’s tiny commercial district, Fitzgerald’s has been attracting a good local crowd since opening almost three years ago. The “1928” in its name refers to the building, constructed that year as an A&P.
