The Coal House
710 Arnold Avenue
Point Pleasant Beach
Hours: Tues–Thurs, 11 am to 9 pm; Fri–Sat, 11 am to 10 pm; Sun, noon–9 pm.
Style: Lively, lofty space feels more Manhattan SoHo than downtown Point Pleasant Beach, but don’t let the hip vibe throw you—chic couples and families with young children are equally at home.
Don’t Miss: Start with a super-fresh salad; all are big enough to share. A favorite is the Coal House salad ($9.25)—baby greens and crisp romaine with chunks of Pecorino Romano, tossed with a light vinaigrette. But the true draw is the thin, crispy-crust pizza: Order several 10-inch pizzettes (six slices) to share. Try the Coal House Original ($8.95)—fresh mozzarella, olive oil and basil or the Di Cippola ($9.25), which has prosciutto and is topped with a pile of arugula. There are vegan and gluten-free options. Not in the mood for pizza? Choose one of the 10 panini, pastas, or calzones on the menu. Leave room for dessert. Gigantic cupcakes are the specialty, quartered and served with a generous topping of whipped cream. The red velvet ($5.25) is excellent.
Heads Up: Parking is plentiful in the restaurant’s private lot, so no need to circle the block looking for a space.
The Scoop: In summer, when this beach town swells with visitors, the wait for a table can be 30 minutes or more. No worries: The restaurant is BYO, so bring wine and hang out on the outdoor benches chatting with other patrons. There’s a friendly neighborhood feel here.
