Champion Chai

After a trip to India, herbalist and yoga teacher Ricardo Dacosta created a chai tea blend that has now won a national championship.

At the recent North American Tea Championship in Las Vegas, Yogic Chai of Montclair won the chai category with a score of 89 points out of 100, the highest ever for a chai. Ricardo Dacosta, 33, a yoga teacher with training in Chinese herbalism, founded Yogic Chai and created its winning blend, organic Original Masala Chai, after a 2007 trip to India. The secret? The blend of black tea leaves and spices (clove, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom), sold dry, is fuller in spices than most chais. Trial-size packets of any of Yogic Chai’s dozens of blends are available for $1 at yogicchai.com.
