Need a good doctor? Who doesn’t? Even if you and the members of your family are blessed with good health—and we hope you are!—you still need the names of physicians you can trust.

Speaking of trust, we are pleased that people across New Jersey have grown to rely on New Jersey Monthly for the information they need to make smart health care choices. New Jersey Monthly provides the only statewide list of top doctors based entirely on an independent survey of New Jersey’s licensed doctors. And this year’s list includes more doctors in more specialties than ever before. Click here to access the database.

To compile the list, New Jersey Monthly commissioned an independent survey by Leflein Associates, a research firm in Ringwood. You can click here to view the complete methodology used in the survey, but here it is in a nutshell: Leflein Associates mailed a questionnaire to every doctor licensed in New Jersey for at least five years. Each of the doctors was asked to vote for physicians he or she would choose to treat him or herself or a family member. Leflein tallied the votes and provided the preliminary results to New Jersey Monthly.

Next, we asked a blue-ribbon advisory board of New Jersey doctors to examine the preliminary results for possible additions or deletions, with special attention to physicians in their respective fields of practice or regions of the state. The 24 board members were picked by New Jersey Monthly from among top vote getters in previous surveys. Click here to see a full list of the board members.

In the end, 839 doctors in 68 medical specialties were named to the list. We think the list is a valuable tool for our readers, but we remind you that it is just one tool among many. Personal research and recommendations from your own health care professionals or from neighbors and friends should also be considered when you need a physician.

For this year’s list, New Jersey Monthly received special assistance from the Medical Society of New Jersey. Additionally, the members of our advisory board provided input that helped us add four new specialties to the list.
