E. Alma Flagg
Her classmates at Newark’s East Side High School voted her Most Likely to Succeed, and that she did. She earned her master’s degree at Montclair State and her Ph.D. from Columbia University. Flagg returned to Newark as a teacher in 1943, and in 1964 was appointed principal of the Hawkins Street School, becoming the first African-American female school principal in Newark. She later served as the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum.
