Yogi Berra and Phil Rizzuto “The Scooter” settled in Hillside and Berra is a staple in Montclair. Berra’s baseball skills far surpass his malapropisms; Rizzuto became the oldest ex-Yankee inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. As announcers, managers, and pitchmen, the pair became icons to people who never saw them play. On hearing that Joe DiMaggio was engaged to Marilyn Monroe, Berra said, “I don’t know if it’s good for baseball, but it beats the hell out of rooming with Rizzuto.”
