I am of the firm opinion that one of the marks of a great artist is his/her ability to evolve over time, both intellectually and stylistically. That is actually not as easy to achieve as one might assume.
There is a contemporary painter, one Christian Vincent, who I have had the great privilege of watching “in action” a bit. I have seen his work consistently evolve as he and his life evolve, and the results are exciting and provocative.
His work has been shown in many cities across the nation and around the world, and his paintings grace many a public place. Some of his stylistic evolutions are not as pleasing to me as others, but never are they anything short of fascinating.
His most recent pieces (they are discomfiting!) are on display at the Mike Weiss Gallery in Manhattan until August 16th in an exhibit entitled Runyon Canyon. The Gallery is located at 520 West 24th Street. On the left are two recent examples of his work.
The newest portraits of damaged beings are as compelling as (though radically different from) the Los Angeles-based artist's earlier work. His last show and/or “period” featured some of the most glorious portraits of women that I have ever seen from any era.
His whole canon thus far is amazing, and I would encourage serious collectors to check him out.
I wish I could afford him, for I’d commission a portrait of Shakespeare’s Prospero for the balcony lobby of my theatre. Maybe someday (if I play the lottery)!
