Speaking of Slings and Arrows

In my last two posts I borrowed the Shakespearean term "slings and arrows" to talk about the difficulties (and rewards) of getting a major production like King Lear off the ground.

Now that Lear is up and running--and receiving rave reviews--I'd like to recommend, for your DVD viewing pleasure, a different Slings and Arrows, a favorite of mine.

For those of you who have perhaps missed the Canadian television series of that name, I encourage you to rent all three seasons on DVD.  

I think it originally aired on the Sundance Channel.  It is one of the most delightful and funniest “riffs” on life in the theatre that I have ever seen. 

For anyone who loves Waiting for Guffman or Shakespeare or theatre or hilarious actors, this will be right up your alley! 

For me, it’s often frighteningly familiar, but then, I take comfort in the fact that the “slings and arrows” that come the way of all artists are being celebrated and immortalized with delicious delight and humor.

Of course, that’s also what makes it worthwhile, and what keeps me from the peaceful but very boring job of carving acorns.
