The Strange Sports Scene

Despite the Rutgers bowl victory last night and the reigning-Super Bowl-champion Giants' spot at the top of the NFC East, New Jersey still isn't quite recognized as a sports powerhouse. Princeton, even less so. (No offense, eggheads.)

The White Album at 40

Forty years ago, George Martin, the Beatles' producer, advised the band against releasing what would become known as the White Album as a two-record set, and both Ringo and George later allowed that editing it down to a single disc might have been a good idea.

But few would argue today that the Beatles made a mistake. Last night's note by note, song by song, reproduction by the Fab Faux--an extraordinary group of five musicians devoted to reproducing the Fab Four's entire body of work live onstage--shows more clearly than can ever be appreciated on even the finest stereo system just how monumental a musical achievement the White Album was, and still is.

The Mystery of Time

I slipped across the border last night to hear the Fab Faux, the crazy-good Beatles cover band (the description does not do them justice) play Let It Be and Abbey Road, note for note, in full.

There are no seats at Terminal 5, on W.56 th St. in Manhattan, so I stood for three-and-a-half hours. When you get to a certain age, which I have reached, you don't go out of your way to stand in place anywhere for more time than it takes to reach the front of a hot dog line. But this was worth it.

Sweet Traditions

Here at New Jersey Monthly, we know all of the fine points of this great state; but have to admit, one of the cool things about being from the Garden State is that NYC is just across the river. And there is no more magical time to visit the city than during the winter holidays.

Here We Come A Caroling

I don't know what it is about the holidays that makes you want to watch shows, movies, and performances you've already seen a bunch of times. A combination of nostalgia and tradition, I suppose. But we're all sucked in.

Sweet Soweto

Under the direction of David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer, the Soweto Gospel Choir sang with all their soul this past Saturday night at NJPAC in Newark.

Finally PAC-ing It In

As a former Sunday School attendee and teacher, I've heard more than my fair share of "This Little Light of Mine." Listening to twenty or so gospel singers from South Africa belt it out, however, was an entirely new religious experience.
