For Berra, a New Sign Points the Way

The township of Montclair officially renamed a street in tribute to Yogi Berra on Saturday, and as the Yankee great might have put it, even though he could not attend, he was honored to be there.

With the town’s mayor, other officials and members of the Berra family looking on, a new pin-striped street sign was unveiled on what is now Yogi Berra Way. The sign will forever mark the confounding corner of Edgewood Terrace and Edgewood Road. It’s the spot that inspired Berra to utter his immortal words: “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”

The ceremony was held a few blocks from Berra’s longtime Montclair home. However, neither Berra nor his wife, Carmen, were able to attend. Berra’s family explained that 87-year-old Hall of Famer is fighting a winter cold and could not risk coming out on the damp, chilly afternoon.

The youngest of Berra’s three sons, Dale, himself a former big-league ballplayer and Montclair resident, delivered a short and heartfelt address, thanking the township for honoring his famous dad. “Montclair is our home,” said Berra, who grew up in the town. “We are Mounties through and through, always have been, always will be.”

Also on hand were a second Berra son, Larry Berra Jr., and three of Yogi’s grandchildren: Larry’s daughter Lindsay Berra, a reporter for MLB.com; and Dale’s children Alexandra, 7, and Kay, 6.
