Doodle Art for Charity

Most of us doodle to pass the time. Bergen County resident John Rosica doodles to do good.

A collection of whimsical works by Rosica is for sale at the Wyckoff Family YMCA (691 Wyckoff Ave.) until July 19. Proceeds will be donated to nonprofit organizations such as the National Autism Association, Alzheimer’s Association, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and Tell Every Amazing Lady (T.E.A.L.) About Ovarian Cancer as well as the YMCA.
Rosica, 76, has been doodling for as long as he can remember. “All of my drawings come from my subconscious,” he says. “I am not really drawing things that are discernible.” His works of various lines and geometric shapes are usually done in black-and-white, but for this initiative, Rosica has added color to four original works that represent the charities and cost $1,000. A total of 24 framed 17” by 22” drawings are on display; the rest are priced at $400.
The former Marine says he feels he has a responsibility to help people. “It’s habit and training, and I think that’s what art is about,” he says. “Art is about sharing with people, whether its money or the pleasure of art.”
