Off the Wall

January 29, 2010 08:03 PM ET | Schlager, Ken | Permanent Link

I had been looking forward to trying the climbing wall at Life Time Fitness—but not with the cameras rolling and the entire Internet watching as I flailed away with hands and feet.

I’ve been up climbing walls before, but it never seemed this tough. And no wonder. Before the Get Fit team hit the pegs, Shari put us through a workout that left arms and legs feeling like rubber. Squats, forward thrusts, side thrusts—and all while hefting a weighted ball. Then there was the “inch-worm,” a particularly un-Ken-friendly means of groveling across the gym floor. Plus 15 pushups. And then, the wall.

I started strong (who doesn’t?), then reached an impasse about halfway up. I either had to grab something with my right hand or find a better place for my left foot. My head was saying, “go up"; my body saying, “go home.” I grabbed for a peg, slipped, and fell backward into the downward pull of my tether.

Oh the shame of it.

But I was not alone. Only three of the nine members of the Get Fit crew made it to the top. We’ll be back at it in a few weeks, trying again to rise to Shari’s challenge.

That’s it for now. Gotta go eat another salad. Can’t wait for the weigh-in later today.
