Walking The Walk, Talking The Talk

January 29, 2009 06:31 AM ET | Ken Schlager | Permanent Link

When I first learned I’d be going on the Walk to Washington, I figured: “Oh boy, time to get new shoes.”

But it turns out it’s not a “walk” at all, but a four-hour ride on a chartered 14-car train from Newark to the nation’s capital. There’s a dinner in D.C., a breakfast, then it’s everybody back on the train.

The purpose of the walk is to talk—or schmooze, if you prefer. We’re told the train will be filled with about 1,000 movers-and-shakers. I assume they are referred to as such for reasons other than moving among the cars and shaking hands. Governor Corzine will be there, although the Star-Ledger reports this morning that three of his potential GOP opponents for the state’s top spot will not.

Although the state’s Chamber of Commerce has been running the walk for 72 years, most of us non-moving, non-shaking types know little about what goes on as the wheels roll down to D.C.

I’m eager to see for myself. The train pulls out in about two hours. I’ll keep you posted.
