Geography for Golfers 101

August 25, 2009 05:29 PM ET | Ken Schlager | Permanent Link

We're thrilled that the world's top golfers are playing at Liberty National this weekend. But will someone please remind them they are in New Jersey—and not that other state across the Hudson?

It's bad enough that New Yorkers get to claim our Giants and Jets as their own—when in fact, the Buffalo Bills are the Empire State's lone pro football team. Then there's the matter of the Nets, who seem hell bent on moving to Brooklyn. (What are they, starving artists?)

Now comes the spectre of Tiger Woods and company confusing Liberty National Golf Club's spectacular view of Manhattan with Manhattan itself. The first tip-off arrived in today's Star-Ledger, in a story headlined "Liberty National impresses." In describing how he's looking forward to this week's Barclays tournament, golfer Padraig Harrington declares: "And you're in a great city as well, which adds to it, I think."

Perhaps Padraig was talking about Jersey City, but somehow I doubt that. Chances are, he cast his eyes across the Hudson and assumed he was in another one of those boroughs he learned about as a lad in Dublin.

Memo to Padraig: By all means, hop on a PATH train and check out the Big Apple. But while you are whacking that dimpled ball around the fairways at Liberty National, please remember: It's New Jersey!
