Getting Ready to 'Get Fit'

January 04, 2010 03:49 PM ET | Ken Schlager | Permanent Link

Starting this afternoon, I will be taking part in Get Fit New Jersey, a rigorous, 24-week fitness program at Life Time Athletic in Florham Park. Naturally, I spent the weekend stuffing my face with as much holiday chocolate and other goodies as possible.

With all those calories under my belt – literally – I’m ready to go for what promises to be a life-changing experience. I’ll be taking part in Get Fit with a team of eight other New Jerseyans, all hoping to increase their fitness factors, and knock off a few pounds in the bargain.

New Jersey Monthly will be documenting our progress (or lack thereof) with a new blog and weekly videos on this site. As a first step, I’ve already been subjected to a metabolic test by a Life Time Athletic trainer. This was a piece of cake – you should pardon the expression. For the test, I had to spend about 12 minutes on a treadmill with a heart monitor strapped around my chest and a mask on my face, with tubes sending data about my respiration to a nearby computer.

The resulting CardioPoint Report indicates the amount of fat I burn in different activity zones (based on heart rate). The fitness program will be geared toward raising my fat-burning efficiency in the different zones. I’m all for that.

This blog will be signing off for now. Check back later this week when we launch the Get Fit blog and video. (All wishes for a successful program are welcome, but please, no more chocolate.)

Kettlebell Training

I enjoyed reading this article in the January issue and I am interested in seeing the results of the participants. However, you left out one of the most effective types of fitness training: kettlebell training! In 30 minutes, you can get a more intense workout with a kettlebell than you would get spending hours in a gym. Kettlebells allow you to combine cardio and strength training and can be used anywhere. However, kettlebell training should be done after meeting with a Russian Kettlebell Certified instructor.
