Weekend Picks: Skis and Fleas

March 13, 2008 04:57 AM ET | Hernandez, Roger E. | Permanent Link

Hard to believe it’s the last weekend of winter. By the time the weekend after this comes around — it will be spring!

You can still revel in the snow. Up in Hidden Valley ski resort in Vernon, they’re having an Amazing Race day. Basically, you and a partner race on ski or snowboard solving clues that lead to the final destination. Race begins at 1 p.m., intermediate skiers and above, sign up on race day. Après ski you can listen to hard rockers Sycostatic. Listen to their MySpace: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=72453226

Spring is home makeover season. You can start planning at the North Jersey Spring Home Show, Friday through Sunday at the Morristown Armory. Exhibitors include kitchen craftsmen, architects, landscapers and assorted contractors. And there are seminars on designing a new kitchen, redoing your patio, interior decorating.

You can also go the cheap route: see what you find at the big flea market this Saturday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at New Egypt Speedway

Monday is St. Patty’s and we know of parades this weekend in Atlantic City, Bayonne, Bergenfield, Kearny, Morristown, Newark, Newton, North Wildwood, Seaside Heights, Somerville, and Union. See www.saintpatricksdayparade.com/nj/index.htm for schedules and more info.

See more Irish at Lakewood’s Strand Theater. Saturday the Garden State Philharmonic plays Arthur Foote’s Irish Folksong and Linda Robbins Coleman’s Hibernia Suite, plus Mozart’s 40th Symphony and Vivaldi’s “Spring” from The Four Seasons. The “Musically Speaking” pre-concert chat is at 7:15 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m.

Then Sunday at 2 p.m. The Irish Tenors play the Strand, with operatic renditions of classics such as “Danny Boy” and “Fields of Athenry.”

And it’s Palm Sunday, so your kids can start looking for Easter eggs — while you start thinking about the Shore. Easter egg hunts this Sunday on the boardwalks at Point Pleasant Beach and Seaside Heights.

Happy Hunting!
