Speaking of shopping, the Washington Street Mall in Cape May underwent a major renovation (new brick pathways, lighting, fountains) and the rededication ceremony is Saturday. Cape May also celebrates Harbor Fest this weekend. Friday evening there’s a Summer Solstice Bonfire with story telling, songs and marshmallow roasting; Saturday there’s a street festival with seafood, live entertainment, activities for kids, arts and crafts vendors and educational displays.
And still in Cape May, the AJ Meerwald, a restored 1928 Delaware Bay Oyster Schooner designated as New Jersey's official Tall Ship, is offering public sails Saturday and Sunday. You can help hoist the sails and swab the decks, matey. Or just sit back with a glass of wine and enjoy the salt air.
On a somewhat bigger ship, there is beer. The Battleship New Jersey, the floating museum docked in Camden’s waterfront, is holding the Garden State Craft Brewers Beer Festival, Saturday noon-4 p.m. Fourteen Enn-Jay breweries bring their best stuff. There’s also food and music. $40 to get in.
Two other festivals. Saturday at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds in Millville, it’s the Southern Shore Music Festival. Performers include the seminal doo-wop group The Drifters and three-time Grammy winner Dr. John, with his blend of rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock and New Orleans Creole music. Gates open at 12:30.
Right about the same time but way north of Millville, in Rutherford’s Lincoln Park, cupcake lovers will be in heaven with Cupcake Fest. Free minicupcakes, cupcake related crafters and music from five hot shot local bands. Sponsored by Sweet Avenue Bakeshop and our friends at www.LeafyGreen.info.
We have culture this weekend, too. The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is staging The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, an irreverent send-up of the Bard of Avon. At Greek Theatre, College of St. Elizabeth, every day but Mondays now through July 20.
And we have history. Two hundred fifty years ago the Continental Army beat the Redcoats in the Battle of Monmouth, and all weekend there’s a reenactment at the Monmouth Battlefield in Manalapan.
