Mess The Dress

We spend months — and often thousands of dollars — selecting and perfecting our wedding dress. What a shame that we only wear it once.  NOT.

Some call it Trash the Dress. A Las Vegas (where else?) photographer  is credited with starting this trend: anti-brides who rebel by posing in the most non-pristine backdrops.

A West Orange wedding planner embraces a different, less dramatic version called Mess the Dress. Candice Benson says some brides just want to wear their prized gowns more than once.

She’s arranged to have these newlyweds photographed on the beach, in the ocean, or even on the subway. Most times, Benson adds, the dress can be cleaned and salvaged.

Benson says it’s especially fun to mess with the dress at so-called destination weddings. She  recently sent us photos, shown here, of her clients Oakland newlyweds Jamie and Jason, at the beach after their February nuptials in Los Cabos, Mexico.

“It’s a way to allow them (brides) to have a little more fun, and wear the dress again,” Benson says, adding that the after-wedding photo shoot works better when the bride has the appropriate sense of adventure. She usually finds this out after working with the couple for a while.

Benson uses still photographers to Mess the Dress, but we found plenty of video on YouTube

So what’s the payoff? You lose the pristine-ness of traditional wedding photography, put a little spice into your après party, and take advantage of the great scenery that accompanies some wedding locations.

It’s something old, and something new — a way to start your life together combining tradition with adventure.
