Making Peace

When Christie Brinkley emerged from court after a particularly harrowing and salacious day of testimony against her ex-, we noticed her earrings were in the form of peace symbols.

Was this a subliminal message to project Brinkley as Earth Mom vs a Darth Vader Dad in the sensational public feud? Or was the stylishly spurned ex-model proving that the divorce proceedings were no barrier to trendy fashion?

Probably some of both.

At the Hippie Shop in Fairfield, co-founder Christine Antonelli says anything with the peace symbol on it is flying off the shelves of this cool warehouse-type store.

It’s not just today’s anti-war sentiments. 2008 is the 50th anniversary of the creation of the symbol; it was the work of a British designer and peace activist who pieced together the semaphore signs for the letters N and D, for nuclear disarmament.

Best sellers at Hippie Shop: tie dyed shirts with peace symbols, belts, bags, bracelets, and of course, earrings.

In Oceanport, designer Krista Karagias is hand crafting peace symbols from 18-karat gold and silver, dangling them on leather cords and as charm bracelets. They’re selling on-line from her website, and at Goldtinker in Deal, right alongside more traditional creations from Harry Winston, Bulgari, and Aaron Basha.

It’s all a great way to be trendy and bring a little peace back into your life. Just ask Christie Brinkley.
