The Plaid Fad

Nothing says fall fashion like plaid. It’s ubiquitous: a Catholic school uniform, a big punk belt, a Burberry scarf, a Carhartt workshirt. And this fall, it’s plain that plaid is the fad.

Mad for plaid.
Mad for plaid.

They are mad for plaid on television’s Gossip Girl; the teen fashionista’s version of Sex And The City. The colorful criss-crossed look in turn is picked up by trendy youth designers like Free People and retailers like Urban Outfitters.

You’ll find plaid hair clips, knee socks, and underwear from Free People. At Urban’s always crowded store in Montclair, shoppers were scooping up plaid boy’s shirts and matching them with jeans or a mini skirt for preppie chic.

For grownup gossip girls, nearly every designer is pushing plaid. At Saks, plaid pencil skirts and suits prevail. Ralph Lauren’s collections feature classic Glen and Hunter’s plaid, made contemporary by mixed and matched patterns.

The stars set the tone. Celeb spotters point to Katie Holmes’ wide legged plaid pants, worn a year ago for a stroll in the park. This summer we saw Kim Kardashian’s plaid shorts, Vanessa Hudgens in a black and blue plaid dress, and Mary-Kate Olsen never without a lumberjack plaid shirt in public.

Head to toe plaid is too much for most of us. But a touch here and there; a snatch of plaid brings a spot of color and style. And it says we’re ready for fall; cross-hatchededly cool and comfortable.
