The Inspired Home Volume 2: Playing With Make-Up

In a former life in fashion, the semi-annual picking of the next season’s color palette was, for most, a time to argue endlessly over whether wisteria or lilac would make for a better one-pocket t-shirt. For me, it was just another chance to step foot into the corporate color vault surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of spools of color painstakingly arranged from light to dark…low saturation to high saturation…warm to cool.

Color makes me crazy, fools me into believing I can do anything.

Became a painter just to have tubes of acrylics punctuating my desk. Became a jewelry-maker just to have bowls of beads as a crafty centerpiece on a dining table infrequently put to its intended use. Became a knitter just to have architectural landscapes of yarn-filled glass vases on sideboards and side tables. Became a baker just to have the Wonka-like sugars lined up as greeters every time I opened the cabinet for the salt & pepper.

All these pursuits were short-lived…seemed my only success was the artful arrangement of these tools of the trade as home décor.

A beautiful room starts with gorgeous color. There is no better place to find the latest colors that fill the pages of home décor magazines than a trip to your nearest Sephora. For a color-junky, a few minutes in front of the endless counters of eye shadows, lipsticks and nail enamels brings on a blissful buzz.

Yes, an eye shadow palette can be turned into a room design. Cosmetics color reflects current trends in home furnishings with the season’s most notable standouts being shades of purple and grey, with a bit of shine from metallics. Simply use the pale shades for wall color, the dark shades for upholstery in plush fabrics, and introduce metallics in the room’s accessories.

Get inspired by your everyday world and then simply surround yourself with it. Don’t be shy about taking your favorite make-up on your next trip to your local paint store and home furnishing shops.
