No question, the recession has been a good thing for Nordstrom Rack (www.nordstrom.com) the off-price sister of Nordstrom Department stores.
The newest, and first ever Rack in New Jersey is packing ‘em in at Bergen Town Center (www.bergentowncenter.com), a mecca of discount stores just opened on Route 4 in Paramus.
Let us be clear: pricing is the only reason you’ll want to come here.
It won’t be for Nordstrom’s trademark service, which is non-existent. There are racks and racks of clothing in a large space with no organizational rhyme or reason, which forces you to look through everything to find one thing and consumes much more time than you may be willing to spend.
Dressing rooms won’t make you a convert either. They are locked, sparsely furnished, and guarded by workers who watch judiciously and count your numbered items coming and going.
There are long lines everywhere; for the dressing rooms and the line for the register stretched nearly to the back of the store.
This is the People Express of discounter stores; pack water and a snack and prepare to dig in. You will save a bundle—this is all mostly overflow from this season’s fashions.
Designer labels and store brands are marked 40% and below, most are reduced three to four times from the original price. We netted two pairs of designer shoes, a store label shirt, and designer jeans all for under $150.
Check out the kid’s clothing here as well, quality current fashions for your little ones are plentiful and cheap.
Afterwards, we headed to nearby Riverside Square, where by comparison, shopping at Bloomingdales seemed like a trip to the spa.
The Rack—wasn’t that a medieval torture device? This Rack will stretch mostly your patience. But if you are willing to suffer in the name of savings, you’ll be rewarded handsomely.
