Art of Flowers

April 20, 2009 01:31 PM ET | Permanent Link

Here’s a new concept for girl’s night out, just in time for Earth Day.

Florist extraordinaire Laura Clare of Laura Clare Floral Design and Event Décor  (www.lauraclaredesign.com) is hosting classes in how to arrange flowers for special occasions, and everyday.

The classes, at Clare’s shops in Hoboken and Bernardsville, are touted as “keeping life beautiful and stress free” on a budget.

Clare—who studied horticulture at Cornell, and creates flower arrangements for elaborate weddings, believes working with nature’s creations is good for the psyche. She cites studies showing that flowers help relieve stress and depression in these trying times.

Arranging flowers is relaxing and also therapeutic. And, arrranging these elegant floral pieces yourself is also economical, especially if you have access to a ready supply of cut flowers.

These flower power parties are priced according to the number of folks in your group, and your skill level. It starts at $75 per person. Clare says she’ll take up to twenty attendees—and you can bring plenty of food and wine to accompany. She’ll provide the fresh flowers… and a non-traditional, non-Martha Stewart approach.

As for some simple things all of us can do to enjoy flowers indoors;  Clare says the most important thing is “think about where its (the arrangement) going to go,” after completion. Buy taller flowers so you have room to cut them down: “Maybe it’s a centerpiece, you don’t want anything on your dinner table that gets in your way.”

She advises you to “take advantage of what’s out there”—she especially likes the fresh tulips this time of year.  Hint: blend three varieties, fringed, double tulips, and plain, altogether to create an unusual but beautiful outcome.

If you decide to attend these classes bring a copy of this column with you for a 10% discount. And bring a little fun, color, and friendship into your world, as you learn the art of flowers.
