Do you like this story?
As you might imagine, the tomboy with the bruised shins and head full of baseball stats didn’t grow up to be a hopeless romantic.
My husband quickly learned that glossy cards adorned with arrow-slinging cherubs and truffles wrapped in crinkly red foils were no substitute for a perfectly cooked chop and a freshly vacuumed living-room carpet at the end of this girl’s busy day.
But with Valentine’s Day fast approaching there is a new twist on wine and chocolate that even this hard-nosed realist can fall in love with. According to a recent study by researchers at Oxford University in conjunction with colleagues at the University of Oslo, moderate amounts of wine, dark chocolate, and tea enhances cognitive performance in the elderly.
The study, which was published in the January issue of the Journal of Nutrition, concludes that further scientific investigation is needed to explain lifestyle factors other than diet that may influence individual outcomes. Still, this was enough information for me to want to turn this romantic holiday into my own little research project.
Take wine; add chocolate and a spot of tea. There’s no better way to say “I love you” and to make this Valentine’s quite literally, a day to remember.
