The headline read: “The Wine and Chocolate Diet.” Who could resist such a promise? Lose weight while drinking wine and eating chocolate? I simply had to read on.

Sure enough, like any rational plan for healthy living, moderation is the key—not my strongest suit when it comes to food, especially chocolate.

I saw this “diet” while browsing an English website. Offering a potential weight loss of “half a stone” in three weeks (about seven pounds), the plan’s food items include crumpets, granary toasts, “punnets” of blueberries, digestive biscuits and mangetout—whatever that is. Unfortunately, the recipes seemed like they would require the services of a full-time chef.

Happily though, weekly menus include a respite from the drudgery of total temperance—several small squares or a small bar of chocolate, a dollop of Nutella, low-fat mousse, fruit kebabs dipped in melted chocolate—and the occasional glass of wine.

The theory behind this regimen is that wine and chocolate are the two substances most often responsible for hijacking weight-loss goals. I can attest to that. Therefore, offering wine and chocolate in minute quantities helps keep the diet on track.

Care to give it a try? You can find the plan at womanandhome.com.

Let us know if it works. That would be the best news I’ve heard about wine and chocolate since last year.
