Under The Skyway 2

June 03, 2008 10:50 PM ET | Levin, Eric | Permanent Link

For some reason, this photograph makes me think of what Humphrey Bogart said to Ingrid Bergman in the last scene of Casablanca:

"It doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.''

Change that to "two people who look little next to a crazy thing in this world called the Pulaski Skyway," and you have what Bogie would have said had he grown up in Hudson County or if they had filmed the Rick's Cafe scenes in the Skyway Diner in Kearny.

A little loopy, you say, adding that the bigger problem is that I bowdlerized the beans? What have I done with the hill of beans?

Simple. They are inside the Skyway Diner, where this man and his son just had lunch. And the coffee beans smell great.

And with so many huge trucks rumbling by all day, the Skyway Diner needs several hills of beans. And quite a few cigars.
