A hard rain is gonna fall, said the weather forecast. And it did. At Ploch's Garden Center in Clifton, the flowers took it on the chin.
Perhaps a boxing image is not apropos.
The hazy light of the lifting storm left the splattered flowers looking plump and sensuous.
The raindrops clinging to the bridge of bent rose stems glittered like the lights that span streets in December or that blink on the marquee of a theater where a premiere is being held.
That is the romantic view. Here is another:
The rain ravishes everything. The wet cardboard bleeds and sags. The flowers that are high are brought low. The clutch of little ones lie face down in the pavement, pistils aimed at their heads. The coiled green serpent guards the door, as if with folded arms, smug, knowing it will outlast them all.
