Leaving the road, we crossed a bit of sandy beach and climbed a rocky outcrop thickly covered with wild berry bushes and shrubbery. A narrow path led toward a break in the bushes, beyond which Casco Bay spread to the ocean under a dramatic sky.

I was on my mini-vacation, visitng an old friend who in the last ten years has moved with his wife and three children from Brooklyn to Stone Ridge, New York (just south of Woodstock), to Cape Elizabeth, Maine, which may sound like the boonies but is a very green-minded upscale suburb of Portland, known throughout the state for its superb school system.

In the years when I was special projects editor of People, Anthony Kosner art directed most of the books and special issues I produced, and our collaboration led to a lasting friendship. This was my first visit to Cape Elizabeth, however. Anthony led the way along the path, through the bushes and out to the spectacular rock formation you see here.
