Pushing past the shrubs, we emerged on the rocks of Trundy Point, overlooking Casco Bay, just south of Portland, Maine.

Fond as I am of the Jersey Shore, I had to admit, "We're not in the Garden State anymore."

My friend and host, Anthony Kosner, once my People special projects art director, now my Cape Elizabeth tour director, eased his way down, level by level, to where the rocks were wet and black, washed by the incoming tide.

The higher rocks, pale as sun-bleached bones, were deeply striated, a dense geological Napoleon eons in the making.
