The Silence Making Noise

Pay close attention next time you’re watching a Philadelphia Phillies game. The music you hear between innings might just be some cool tunes from a South Jersey band.
“Their lead engineer snuck it past all the legal,” says Evan McIntyre, lead singer for The Silence, a band formed by a couple of South Jersey kids when they were in high school. They just released their eighth album, Outside World, this spring.
Even though they’ve been active on the local music scene since 1990 and gotten airplay on WXPN, a Philadelphia NPR-affiliate that showcases local music, being played on a Phillies broadcast is big deal for the Silence.
“The group officially began in seventh or eighth grade with me and Tim learning how to play our instruments together,” says McIntyre, who now lives in Philadelphia. Tim is drummer Tim Malcarney of Audubon. In 2007, they added bassist Matt Mueller of New York to the band. McIntyre and Malcarney have full-time day jobs, but manage to practice, write, and record whenever possible.
Even though they are called the Silence, they are quite vocal about the role of the Jersey Shore in their worldview. McIntyre and Malcarney spend their summers surfing at the Shore (and beyond – McIntyre surfs every Thanksgiving day). They’ve raised funds for the Surfrider Foundation, which works to preserve Jersey beaches, and they typically play a show each year at an Ocean City surf invitational.
“Most of my and Tim's life revolves around surfing and being near the water as much as possible. Pretty much all my vacations have been surf trips,” says McIntyre, whose bachelor party was a surf trip to Costa Rica.
For Outside World, they brought in Grammy winner Phil Nicolo, who’s worked with Sting, Mighty, Mighty Bosstones, Dishwalla, Fig Dish and Cibo Matto to mix and master the record, which is one reason McIntyre thinks Outside World is getting more attention than previous albums. Well, that and that engineer who snuck the record into the Phillies music mix.
