Jonathan Adler: Part Deux

Reporting back from a FAB event last night at Papyrus in Short Hills. Really fun to meet Jonathan Adler and see his fall line of paper, pens and more!

It was love at first sight when I made the acquaintance of international design guru Jonathan Adler AND got my hands on his latest collection of stationery bedecked in happy, chic colors.

I’m saving my interview notes for a future issue of New Jersey Monthly, but I’ll share a couple of pearls with you:

SOS: Do you always use your signature vibrant colors in your collections?

JA: Yes. I like pure color, and I’m always true to my palette. I think happy colors are the most effective non-prescription anti-depressants on earth.

SOS: Do you personally wear a lot of color?

JA: I wear color on top, but always white jeans, all year long. White jeans are also good because, as a potter, I work with a lot of white clay, so I don’t have to worry about it showing up on my pants.

SOS: After spending decades in the design world, what still makes you weak in the knees?

JA: I definitely get weak in the knees whenever I see our new product samples for the first time. Other things that make me feel that way would be anything Italian from the seventies … and my husband, of course.

Besides our interview, another fun moment of the evening happened when a devoted fan walked into Papyrus with a cardboard box under his arm. Inside were two glazed clay vases made by JA many years ago. As the man, Kevin, carefully unwrapped his prized vases and presented them to Jonathan to autograph, everyone was a little amazed. Even the potter himself was surprised to see these two works from his early years. "Hey, my claws actually made those!" Jonathan said to his long-time fan.

Of course, my heart sang when JA signed a copy of his book for me. If you haven’t read "Happy Chic Colors" yet, it’s a real treat. Snag a copy and start decorating in a cool new hue!
