Oscar Fashion Buzz: Anne Hathaway’s Revealing Gown

No matter how talented those Academy Awards starlets are, fans and foes always find more to discuss than their award-winning performances...

Didn’t Anne Hathaway look stunning last night at the 85th Academy Awards in her pale-pink Prada gown. During her red-carpet interview, the actress donning the adorable pixie cut (she was sheared for her film role) described her dress (which she chose just several hours before the event) as "all business up front, but a party in the back." That’s an understatement.

Despite Anne’s Best Supporting Actress win for her role in Les Miserables, this morning all the style pundits were abuzz about that now-infamous dress…because you could see her bosoms poking out from the sides… and especially because the darts on the front of the dress gave some viewers the illusion of a nipple reveal. Those who don’t understand the physics of dress seaming just can’t seem to get past it. Hard to believe that, before the Oscars ceremony even began, Anne’s nipples had their own Twitter account at AnneHathawayNipples. And, throughout the evening, Twitter feeds were exploding with hashtags like #LesNipplerables. (No, I am not joking.)

Last year, it was all about Angelina Jolie’s leg reveal. This year it’s Anne Hathaway’s peek-a-boo breasts.

Well, nobody said it’s easy being a Hollywood diva. At least I haven’t heard anyone pan Anne’s jewels…a stunning diamond necklace, diamond bracelets and diamond earrings, all by Tiffany, and worth a sparkly $839,000.

Other remarkable gowns were Jennifer Lawrence’s ultra-grand Dior Haute Couture dress with a massive train that proved to be too much to maneuver, causing her to fall up the stairs as she was about to accept her Best Actress award for Silver Linings Playbook. And yes, this morning her fall seemed to garner more press than her award.

My other favorite looks were pulled off by Amy Adams in a powder-blue, ethereal Oscar de la Renta ballgown; Charlize Theron (with a recently buzzed pixie cut) in white-hot Dior; and Kerry Washington in a jewel-encrusted, bright-coral Miu Miu design. Although Amy, Charlize and Kerry didn’t expose any extra body parts or take any tumbles, I still give them a thumbs-up, based strictly on fashion, not faux-pas.

By the way, if you read my blogpost about designer David Meister, one of his creations was worn by Academy Award presenter Melissa McCarthy last night. Last time I spoke with David, we wasn’t sure which stars might choose to wear his gowns. In fact, sometimes he doesn’t know until he sees his dress walk down the red carpet. Amazing to think that so many celebs don’t decide on their Academy Awards gowns until just a few hours before the show. I take more time than that getting dressed for work in the morning.
