Restaurant News

This week Rosie tells us about Cucharamama in Hoboken, a Corison Cabernet wine dinner at Stage Left in New Brunswick, Li’l Lucy Potholders, a Shabbat dinner at Restaurant Plan B in Asbury Park, and much more news about NJ dining.

CUCHARAMAMA, HOBOKEN
Cucharamama means “big spoon” or “mother spoon” in South America, so it’s no surprise that a large spoon handle spans the front door at the restaurant, which is located at 233 Clinton Street, Hoboken (201-420-1700). When you’re seated, slightly sweetened butter is served in a spoon along with hot flatbread that has been sprinkled with ground Andean peppers and a mixture of Parmigiano-Reggiano and manchego cheeses. Artisanal South American cuisine under the direction of chef/owner Maricel Presilla is featured here, and the menu is heavy on small dishes (almost 40), from which you can make a meal, plus more than a dozen entrées, some of which are cooked in the wood-burning oven. Some recommendations: octopus in Peruvian black olive and panca pepper sauce; beef empanadas with chimichurri sauce; fried green plantains; Peruvian-style skewered marinated shrimp; fresh corn tamal with braised duck; Chilean beef and chicken potpie with fresh corn crust; spicy braised beef with white rice and black beans; and braised short ribs with stir-fried quinoa and Swiss chard. Roast suckling pig is available with a five-day notice. Spanish and South American wines are served, as are Latin-themed cocktails such as mojitos, caipirinhas, and pisco sours, made with natural fruits.

Later this year, Chef Presilla will be opening Ultramarinos, 260 3rd Street, Hoboken, a food emporium that sells Latin American and Spanish ingredients as well as prepared foods like tamales and traditional Latin American desserts. A revised version of her book The New Taste of Chocolate: A Cultural and Natural History of Chocolate With Recipes is expected to be out before the holidays. Last month Presilla was a guest chef at the White House for Fiesta Latina, an event that celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month.

LI’L LUCY POTHOLDERS
Lucy Diaz is only six years old, but she’s already an entrepreneur. Lucy is the founder of Li’l Lucy Potholders; she hand weaves the potholders at home, and they’re available at Beans, 42 Church Street, Montclair (973-783-7175), for $2.15. Not only is Lucy learning life skills, but she’s also learning how important it is to be charitable, by giving 15 cents from every potholder sold to Toni’s Kitchen, a food ministry at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Montclair. Potholders are also available at West Avenue Grill in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania (www.westavegrill.com), and a portion of those proceeds benefits the Devereux Foundation, which helps children and adults with emotional, developmental, educational, and cognitive disabilities. I have kitchen-tested the potholders and find them to be well made, practical, and colorful (they match my kitchen colors). It’s not too early to start collecting gifts for the upcoming holidays. These make perfect stocking stuffers. Beans is also a charming little spot for coffee, tea, pastries, juices, and gift items, and gift baskets are available for order.
