Restaurant News

This week Rosie tells us about Chef Loryn’s Cafe in Madison, the Bernards Inn in Bernardsville, Chef Jesse’s cooking class (with a recipe!), Arthur Schwartz’s area appearances, and much more news about NJ dining.

CHEF LORYN’S CAFE & CATERING, MADISON
There’s a lot to be impressed with at Chef Loryn’s Cafe and Catering, 250 Main Street, Madison, where you can have breakfast or lunch or pick up dinner for the evening. Owner/chef Loryn Dagon, who was previously executive chef at Gary’s Wine & Marketplace (Madison and Bernardsville), delivers in the area, caters throughout the state, and has a Dinners to Go program where she will send you an e-mail twice a week with her daily specials.

We were there for lunch, and my “appetizer” was one the best coconut/chocolate chip cookies that I’ve ever inhaled. A breakfast burrito had all the fixins we love: peppers, onions, mushrooms, and spicy salsa. Other options are cheese, chorizo, and bacon. There are endless combinations of sandwiches and lunch items available: potato salad, mac and cheese, coleslaw, grilled chicken, grilled cheese, eggplant cutlets, fresh vegetables, pastas, rice, pot pies, crab cakes, meat loaf, and tuna, shrimp, and chicken salads. Box lunches are available, perfect to take to a sports event. We plan to pick up sandwiches to take on our next plane trip, which will be a thousand times better than airplane food. Also, no catering job is too small or big. Chef Loryn believes every event should be planned individually and is happy to work within clients’ budgets.

Chef Loryn prepared all of the meals on our visit. We brought home an entrée of shrimp, roasted vegetables, and corn on the cob, with cilantro/lime dressing; a scrumptious crab cake; a corn and black bean salad; and outrageously delicious homemade cookies. Meat loaf, flank steak, crab cakes, vegetables, and starches, plus daily specials, are also available for dinner.

The café is open on weekdays from 7 AM to 7 PM and on Saturdays from 8 AM to 2 PM (closed Sunday). For more info and to place an order call 973-520-8703.
