Restaurant News

This week Rosie tells us about Fish in Asbury Park, Plum on Park in Montclair, places where you can celebrate New Year’s Eve, and much more news about NJ restaurants.

FISH, ASBURY PARK
We’re thrilled that chef Michael Haimowitz, who wowed us at Arthur’s Landing in Weehawken, is the executive chef at Fish, 601 Mattison Avenue, Asbury Park. This 5,500-square-foot restaurant is located in the former Asbury Park National Bank built in 1885 and seats 130 as well as 12 in the Vault Room for private dining.

Chef Haimowitz, a Culinary Institute of America graduate like owners Jim and Karen DeGilio, has an appealing seafood-focused menu. Knowing that some people don’t eat fish, he also offers grass-fed beef tenderloin, roasted Amish chicken, double-cut Kurobuta pork chops, and roasted veal medallions.

There are many choices to start your meal, including ceviche and crudo as well as old favorites such as crispy calamari, jumbo lump crab cake, pan-roasted Maine mussels, lobster mac and cheese, and salads. Or opt for something a bit different, like Low Country shrimp and grits with applewood-smoked bacon, scallions, tomato, and fresh thyme. Some entrées to tempt you are pan-roasted halibut with chorizo, cockles, and fingerling potatoes; butter-basted Barnegat Light scallops with roasted cauliflower and pancetta risotto; citrus-and-honey-marinated black cod with baby spinach and shimeji mushrooms; crab-stuffed local fluke gratinée with sautéed baby green beans and roasted tomato; and grilled yellowfin tuna with warm peperonata, Swiss chard, and polenta croutons.

Finish your meal with the E Street Truffle, consisting of warm caramel-filled dark chocolate and hazelnut cake, chocolate sauce, and truffle gelato; a dulce de leche banana split; or lemon ricotta cheesecake with agave-glazed blueberries and lemon curd. Too full? Try the sorbet or almond biscotti and berries.

Fish is open daily from 11:30 AM, and happy hour is celebrated from 4 to 7 PM daily with cocktails, appetizers, and wines costing $5 and beers $3. For reservations call 732-455-8181.

PLUM ON PARK, MONTCLAIR
It was called Greek Delights and then Market, and now it’s Plum on Park at 14 Park Street, Montclair (973-744-4100), serving breakfast and lunch Mondays through Saturdays from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Menu items include omelets, soups, sandwiches, pressed sandwiches, and salads. The signature sandwich is roasted pork tenderloin, balsamic-poached plums, Brie, honey mustard, and pickled red onions, on a baguette. Be forewarned: This refurbished diner is small, and the booths seat only four people. Does anyone remember what this space was called before Greek Delights?
