Restaurant News

This week Rosie tells us about Morton’s in Hackensack, Chef Humberto Campos Jr. at the James Beard House in NYC, the Great Grill & Pig Out to benefit Table to Table, and much more news about NJ restaurants.

MORTON’S THE STEAKHOUSE, HACKENSACK
It’s the attention to detail that often distinguishes one restaurant from another. White napkins replaced with black for diners wearing dark colors, wineglasses replaced even when the same bottle is reordered, a complimentary photo taken of the table when a special event is being celebrated, and personalized and dated menus offering a celebratory greeting. In our case it was a happy birthday, and we were at Morton’s the Steakhouse, Riverside Square Mall, 1 Riverside Square, Hackensack. Our starter was an easily shared center cut of iceberg lettuce with chopped egg, tomato, bacon bits, and Morton’s blue cheese dressing. The plate was cold, the lettuce crisp—this is one of our favorite salads. An equally delicious appetizer was the chopped salad with iceberg, romaine, hearts of palm, artichoke hearts, bacon, blue cheese, chopped egg, purple onion, tomato, and avocado with Dijon mustard vinaigrette. If you prefer fish as a starter, then try the lump crabmeat, lobster, or shrimp cocktail; tuna tartare; oysters in various preparations; lobster bisque; or chilled or baked ocean platter that can serve from two to six people. Steaks rule at Morton’s, and while the fish entrées look appealing, it is meat, which we eat little of at home, that we order here. For me it’s the domestic double rib lamb chops, and Lowell orders the bone-in rib eye. Our relatives always have the filet (mignon) Oskar, containing asparagus, jumbo lump crab, and béarnaise sauce, or the double-cut filet mignon. Sides were grilled asparagus with balsamic glaze, sautéed garlic green beans, and crisp Lyonnaise potatoes. Desserts were so good that we couldn’t pick a favorite. Highly recommended are the key lime pie, the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, and the upside-down apple pie, which must be ordered at the beginning of the meal, as it is made to order.
