Jim Filip, owner of Doris & Ed’s in Highlands, says the restaurant, closed since sustaining heavy damage in Tropical Storm Irene, is not even close to reopening.

Filip, a highly respected restaurateur known as a pioneer of fine dining at the Shore, said, “I’m still waiting for the insurance companies and cannot make any repairs on the restaurant. I’ll make a decision probably after the winter.”

The restaurant is usually closed in January and February. Filip, who bought the restaurant in 1978 from its original owners (Doris and Ed), has consistently received very good reviews and has been awarded the Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence every year since 1985.

The restaurant was the first in New Jersey to receive the coveted James Beard Foundation designation as one of “America’s Classics.” New Jersey Monthly readers have repeatedly named it a favorite seafood destination. Doris & Ed’s has also been featured in Gourmet, Bon Appetit and the New York Times.
