Restaurant News

Today Rosie tells us about Bistro Seven Three in New Providence.

BISTRO SEVEN THREE, NEW PROVIDENCE
Bistro Seven Three
, which recently opened in New Providence, has  sister restaurant of the same name in Berndardsville. Both offer moderate prices and friendly attentive service; a neighborhood spot to try, if you are in the area.

Bare, marble-topped tables with black napkins and a few flat screen TVs create a casual ambiance. On our visit, there were families with children, couples and people on dates. Service was friendly and attentive.

Foccacia bread was placed on the table when we were seated, and specials were printed with prices. Three of the four starters can be recommended: a colorful red- and golden-beet salad with tomatoes, lively horseradish-parsley sauce, feta, and olive oil; tender fried calamari; and a crab cake. However the clunker was tough, charred calamari, which an accompanying bacon aioli and piperade dip could not save. Two fish dishes were well executed: a crispy-skinned Scottish salmon, enriched with a creamy and tangy avocado and fresh-lime tomato salsa; and a fillet of red snapper amped up with scrumptious whipped scrod and red-potato brandade, asparagus, and fresh herbs. Grilled hanger steak with French fries and herb-compound butter was flavorful and cooked medium rare as ordered. The coq au vin had a lackluster sauce. The tiramisu was one of the best versions that we have tasted in a long time as it had a robust taste of espresso. The other two desserts did not impress. The mini cannolis were cloyingly sweet and a special of profiteroles had a stale or over baked shell and were under filled with ice cream.
