Restaurant News

Today, Rosie tells us about Mighty Quinn’s in Clifton.

MIGHTY QUINN’S, CLIFTON
After a casual dinner with six friends at Mighty Quinn’s, we turned to each other and said, “Where should we go for dinner now?” We were looking forward to trying this restaurant, which offers slow-smoked barbecue using quality naturally raised meats, as they have been getting favorable reviews. The company has three locations in Manhattan, two in Brooklyn and one Clifton.

Mighty Quinn’s has a cafeteria-style set up. Meat and sides are ordered at the counter, served on a cardboard plate, then you slide your tray to the cash register, where you select a drink (soda, wine-by-the-bottle or beer), and pay the cashier. Pick up some plastic utensils, sit, eat and bus your own table.

Having a conversation with table mates is impossible, as the restaurant is very noisy with blaring music.

Everyone agreed that the half chicken was moist and while under seasoned it was edible. The brisket, while tender was bland in color and taste, and reminded us of boiled meat. Except for a slightly smoky flavor, the dark-crusted brontosaurus rib, about a pound of meat, was also flavorless, although I did enjoy nibbling at the bits of meat on the humongous bone. Once we anointed the meat with the barbecue sauce that was on the table, the taste was much better, but not enough to make us want to have more. The wings were too spicy. Garnishes of coleslaw, pickled onions, cucumbers and chiles accompany the dishes. As for the sides: pomme frites were too salty; baked beans too sweet. The sweet-potato casserole with maple syrup and pecans, and the sweet corn-and-edamame salad were the best of the bunch. Six people threw away more food than they ate.

Mighty Quinn’s is open daily from 11:30 AM

So where did we go for dinner after Mighty Quinn’s? Why Holsten’s in Bloomfield for ice cream of course.
