There is a super highway in the sky called the Atlantic Flyway navigational route where millions of birds migrate through New Jersey en route to their final destination from South America to North America and back. Opening during the 100-hour Centennial Celebration Marathon, Skies Alive focuses on New Jersey’s role in bird migration. The interactive exhibit illustrates the uniqueness of the state’s diverse environments and the importance of preserving its natural resources to ensure the survival of these transient birds. The Newark Museum, in partnership with The New Jersey Audubon Society, provides the visitor an opportunity to explore the amazing flight and migration adaptations, species diversity, and conservation, among other learning focuses. Visitors can actually view a bird’s perspective of earth, and see the depleting natural resources through a simulated journey from the sky. One of the many birds featured in the exhibit is the endangered Red Knot, whose stopping point is the shore of New Jersey to feast on the eggs of the horse shoe crab.
