October 8, 2009 - October 30, 2009
This October, graphic novelist Howard Cruse; playwright, director, and screenwriter Neal LaBute; and actress Piper Perabo will speak at two installments of The Visiting Writers’ Reading Series, sponsored by the Ocean County College Office of Student Life and the School of Languages and the Arts. The events, which are free and open to the public, will be held on the OCC Main Campus, College Drive, Toms River, NJ.
Howard Cruse, a critically-acclaimed graphic novelist whose work is celebrated internationally, will present on Thursday, October 8, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Lecture Hall of the Technology Building. Cruse’s graphic novel Stuck Rubber Baby was a finalist for both an American Library Association Gay/Lesbian Fiction Award and a Lambda Literary Award. His comic strips have been frequently anthologized, with translated versions seeing reprint in England, France, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, and Sweden, and his cartoon artwork has been included in gallery exhibits in New York, San Francisco, Vancouver, London, and other cities.
On Friday, October 30, playwright, director and screenwriter Neal LaBute, along with actress Piper Perabo, will present from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Solar Lounge of the Student Center. Combining intriguing moral and ethical metaphors with dark portraits of the underside of American life, LaBute is one of America’s most controversial playwrights and filmmakers. His films include In the Company of Men, which won the Sundance Filmmaker’s Trophy as Best Dramatic Feature, Your Friends & Neighbors, Nurse Betty, Possession, The Shape of Things, and The Wicker Man. In 2000, LaBute refocused his attentions to the stage with Bash: Latterday Plays, The Mercy Seat, and Fat Pig. LaBute’s Broadway debut, reasons to be pretty, was a critical hit and eared him three Tony nominations, including Best Play.
Perabo, who starred in the films Coyote Ugly, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Imagine Me & You, is fresh from her Broadway debut in reasons to be pretty. At the Visiting Writers’ Reading Series, she will perform some of LaBute’s monologues and discuss the craft of bringing his characters to life on stage.
